Gymnasts Edged by Titans, Young Wins All-Around

UW-Whitewater, ranked second in Division III, lost to UW-Oshkosh 182.70-182.375 Friday night in Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Mary Kate Young (Lawrenceville, GA/Cullins Hill) topped UW-Whitewater's performances in the meet, winning the floor exercise competition with a 9.60 and earning the top all-around score of 37.30.

Allison Nelson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) led a 1-2-3-4 Whitewater sweep in the vault.  Nelson scored 9.575, followed by teammates Katie Thompson (Kingsport, TN/Sullivan South) at 9.425, and Siri Wischmann (Delano, MN/Delano) and Leah Applin (Brooklyn Park, MN/Champlin Park) tying for third with 9.375.  

Veronica Overby (Kaneohe, HI/James B. Castle) gave UW-W a third win in the four events, topping the field on the balance beam with a 9.375.

Whitewater's vault team, totaling five scores on one apparatus, also had a notable evening, compiling the sixth highest team vault score in the school record book, 47.05.  That quintet included Nelson (9.575), Thompson (9.425), Applin and Wischmann at 9.375, and Young (9.30).

The Warhawks will wrap up the home portion of the 2010 schedule Saturday, February 27 at 2:00, hosting Gustavus Adolphus College in the Williams Center.  That meet will be the final tune-up before the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship hosted by Gustavus Adolphus in Saint Peter, Minnesota March 7.
