Volleyball Advances in WIAC Tournament

UW-Whitewater, seeded fourth, defeated fifth seed UW-Stevens Point 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-16) in the first round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament at the Kris Russell Volleyball Arena in Whitewater, Wisconsin Tuesday evening.  UW-W, 27-7, advances to play WIAC co-champion and number one seed UW-Eau Claire in a semifinal match Friday at 7:30 in Eau Claire.  The winner of Friday's match will play for the tournament title Saturday afternoon at 2:30.  Eau Claire is hosting both semifinals Friday and the championship and third place matches Saturday.

Whitewater jumped out front 7-2 in game one.  With the score 13-8, UW-W went on a 4-0 run, and eventually built a ten point lead at 20-10.  Point got it back within 22-16 before the Warhawks closed out the game.

With game two tied 3-3, Whitewater used a 5-0 spurt to lead 8-3.  UW-W led 13-6 when the Pointers responded with a run of four points to make it 13-10.  At 14-11 Whitewater scored the next six points for the largest margin in the game.

UW-W led 6-4 in game three and scored the next three points to go up 9-4.  The Warhawks used three more three point runs to close out the match.

Whitewater hit .250 in the match, including a .364 in game two.  The Pointers hit .078 for the match, the fifth consecutive match UW-W has held an opponent under .100.

Sofia Sanchez (Janesville/Craig) led both teams with 13 kills, with UW-W teammates Katy Krajnak (Racine/Case) and Caitlin Hogan (New London/New London) close behind at 12 each.  Christina DeGroot (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) topped Whitewater with 17 digs and 36 assists. 

The Pointers were led by Kaitlin Wolfe's eight kills.  Christina Brinkman had 13 digs and Molly Elderbook contributed 12.

UW-Stevens Point ends the 2010 season with a 21-13 record.
