The UW-Whitewater women's volleyball team, ranked twelfth according to the American Volleyball Coaches Association top 25 poll, defeated seventh ranked Carthage College 3-0 (29-27, 29-27, 25-21). This is the Warhawks second win of the UW-Whitewater Invitational as they defeated Illinois Wesleyan earlier this afternoon. UW-W improves to 11-4 overall and Carthage drops to 12-2.

The first set was an intense battle of defense and offense from both teams. The score was tied 17 different times with the biggest lead by either team being just four points when UW-W led 19-15. After multiple lead changes and momentum shifts the Warhawks prevailed taking the first set 29-27.
Using the momentum built up from the first set win, UW-W jumped out to a 9-3 lead. The biggest lead of the set was seven with the 'Hawks leading 14-7.
The Lady Reds gradually crept back into the game to tie it up at 21. There was a thought of deja vu for the rest of the set as it ended just like the first with UW-W coming out on top with a 29-27 victory.
As the Warhawks were rolling,
Caitlin Hogan (New London/New London) gave Whitewater a huge lead in set three as she started serving for what would end up the longest run in the match. Starting with the scored tied at three, UW-W had five kills and an ace before Carthage called a timeout down 11-3. The total run ended up being 11 points and Whitewater had the biggest lead of the match, up ten 13-3.
Again, Carthage managed to put a couple small runs together to sneak back into the game but the Warhawks only allowed them to get to within three the rest of the way and took the set 25-21.
Hogan,
Katy Krajnak (Racine/Case) and
Sofia Sanchez (Janesville/Craig) had nine kills each and Hogan added four assist blocks.
UW-W was lead by
Alyssa Bauer (Naperville, IL/Central) defensively with 32 digs. Four other Warhawks joined her in double-digits including
Keri Klotzbuecher (Clintonville/Clintonville) with 15,
Alyse Karls (Dane/Lodi) had 14, and
Annie Berkley (Racine/Washington Park) and
Kelli Trautmann (Seymour/Little Chute) added 10 apiece.
Whitewater will continue play in the UW-Whitewater Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, September 26 with matches at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm against Heidelburg and Elmhurst in the Williams Center volleyball arena in Whitewater.
