Statistics Tell the Story of Stagg Bowl

The Numbers Don't Lie (or do They?)

Psssssst.  We've got the inside scoop on Stagg Bowl 2009.  Those sabremetrics guys don't have anything on else.  We've so confident (or ignorant, choose) we can even print out a box score ahead of time.  Hey, meeting for the fifth consecutive does indicate some tendencies.   UW-W's Championship Central Site

Hey, we had some dangling decimal points so we lopped them off, rounding up or down.  (Who punts 4.75 times a game?)  So you're gonna see some numbers that don't add up.

We can even tell you that Whitewater's leading rusher will gain 145 yards, and Mount Union's 126.  Mount Union's top receiver (catches) will have 7 receptions, and the top receiver (yards) will account for 125.  Whitewater's top pass catcher(s) numbers will be 6 and 80.  The leading tackler for Whitewater will have 12 tackles, and MU's top tackler with have 10.

What's more, UW-W is six times more likely to kick a field goal.  However, Mount Union is more likely to score a touchdown, and twice as likely to score on an unusual play (interception return, blocked punt vs. fumble recovery).

The final score?  We're not doing all the work for you.  Buy a ticket to the game, pull up the footrest, turn the radio on in the car, or check the box score in the paper.   J.J. and the crew need the coin taking stats.  Besides, these numbers may lie.

Figures often beguile me, particularly when I have the arranging of them myself; in which case the remark attributed to Disraeli would often apply with justice and force: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, darned (*) lies and statistics."
