The Series: Whitewater leads the all-time series 37-23. The series began with a 26-6 Whitewater win in 1923. UW-W's longest win streak was eight games (1991-98). The Warhawks, having won the last seven games, could tie that streak today. Eau Claire turned that streak in the 90's around, winning five in a row (1998-2002). The largest margin of victory for Whitewater was a 70-0 win in 1958, also the series record for most points, combined, scored in a game. There's No Place Like Home: Whitewater has gone 32-1 in Perkins Stadium since the beginning of the 2005 season. UW-W is ending a four game streak of home games. The Warhawks, with six home games this year, will split the remaining four games between home (River Falls, Oshkosh) and road (Stevens Point, La Crosse). The Blugolds, on the other hand, are ending a string of four straight road games.
The Warhawks So Far: Although UW-W returns two 1,000 yards rushers and an All-Americans from last year, the passing game has been noteworthy. UW-W leads the WIAC in pass efficiency, as does QB
Jeff Donovan (Wauwatosa/East). Donovan has completed 76% of his passes for nine touchdowns and has not thrown a pick.
Aaron Rusch (Hartford/Hartford) (22 catches) and
Adam Brandes (Burlington/Catholic Central) (5 touchdowns) have been the favorite targets. The Warhawks have the number one scoring offense in the league (43.2/game).
The Blugolds So Far: Eau Claire's Kyle Paulson is second in the league in total offense (280.2), with wideout Spencer Kehoe second in both receptions (6/game) and yards (77.2/game). Linebackers Ryan Leis (7 tackles/game) and Bryant Dorsey (6.2) are joined by DB Ross Porter (6.2) as defensive leaders.
Last Year's Game(s): In a schedule oddity, or rather a tale of the times for WIAC teams, Whitewater and Eau Claire played twice last year. The Warhawks opened the WIAC season with a 16-14 win at Carson Park in Eau Claire September 13. Two
Jeff Schebler (Davenport, IA/Assumption) field goals gave UW-W a 6-0 lead at the half. The Blugolds intercepted a pass on the first series of the second half and started a drive at the WW 5. Cory Sartorelli scored from one yard out to put the Blugolds ahead.
Levell Coppage (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park)'s two yard run in the third, his first collegiate score, returned the lead to UW-W in the third. Schebler added his third field goal midway through the fourth quarter, which proved to be the decisive points after UW-EC marched 74 yards in twelve plays to pull within two. Eau Claire's bid for the winning points was ended by a Matt McCulloch interception. Coppage carried the ball 42 times for 220 yards, and Sartorelli led EC with 112 yards on 24 rushes.
The second time around, November 1 in Perkins Stadium, Whitewater won 40-10. UW-W never trailed as the Warhawk defense limited EC to 96 yards rushing and 216 overall (218, 427 for WW). Coppage added 173 yards on 27 carries to his first game numbers, with
Aaron Rusch (Hartford/Hartford) catching seven
Jeff Donovan (Wauwatosa/East) passes for 74 yards and a TD. Sartorelli led the Blugolds with 67 yards on 19 carries, with QB Kyle Paulson connecting on 13-30 for 120 yards, one TD and three interceptions. Whitewater linebacker
