This Season: UW-W won 38-3 at Dickinson State, 58-0 over Midland Lutheran, 42-7 over Puget Sound, 35-3 over Platteville, and 38-14 versus UW-Eau Claire last week. Stout won 35-7 over Simpson College, 24-14 over Jamestown College, 40-6 over Eureka College, 13-12 over UW-River Falls and lost to UW-Stevens Point with 7-6 last week.
By The Numbers: UW-Whitewater's offensive line averages 281 pounds and the Stout defensive line 248. The numbers are 227 for the Warhawks' defensive front versus 279 for Stout's offensive line. Whitewater starts three seniors and no freshman on offense, and eight seniors and no freshmen on defense. Stout's offense has four seniors starting and no freshmen, and the Stout defense has six seniors and one freshman in the number one unit.
The Series: Whitewater leads the all-time series 40-10-2. The series began with a 21-20 Stout win in 1948. Whitewater's longest win streak in the series was thirteen games (1987-1999). UW-W is currently on a seven game streak. Stout won back-to-back games three times, in 1948-1949, again in 1981-1982 and again in 2000-2001. The largest margin of victory for Whitewater was 67-0 win in 1974, also the most points UW-W has scored. Stout's largest margin of victory was 33-20 in 1981. The Blue Devils scored 43 in a 45-43 loss in 1998, also the game that produced the most points combined.
The Coaches: Whitewater's Lance Leipold is in his third season. He is 32-3 coming in to this game, including 15-1 in the WIAC. Duey Naatz, also in his third year of coaching UW-Stout, is 13-12 overall and 7-9 in the WIAC.
Warhawks Meet Ralph Cramden: After playing four consecutive home games the Warhawks are going to have to climb on a bus to play at Williams Stadium in Menomonie. (As an aside: thank goodness for “Williams” and WIAC athletics: Williams Center at UW-W, Williams Fieldhouse at UW-Platteville, and Stout's facility.) UW-S played three of its first four games at home, winning all four, before the narrow loss at UW-Stevens Point last week.
The Warhawks so Far: Coaches have made it a cliché, but Whitewater is a balanced offense. UW-W has more passing yards than rushing in three games, thus two for rushing. The Warhawks have gained 1,339 yards passing and 1,238 rushing. UW-W's scoring has been distributed evenly through five games, scoring the most (62) in the first quarter and the least (49) in the fourth. The Whitewater defense has not given up a point in the first quarter this season. UW-W has the top scoring offense (42.2 points), rushing offense (247.6 yards), and passing offense (267.8) in the WIAC.
The offensive line has given up just one sack this season. The Warhawks are also number one in total defense (205.4), scoring defense (5.4) and pass defense (114.2). Jeff Donovan (Wauwatosa/East) leads the league in passing efficiency and Levell Coppage (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park) is the league's top rusher. Coppage is the team's Offensive Player of the Week, the WIAC Offensive Player of the Week, and a member of D3football.com's Team of the Week.
The Blue Devils so Far: Led by Craig Warminski, Stout has the number two rushing offense in the WIAC (226.4). Warminski is fourth in the league, averaging 100.4 yards per game and 5.0 yards per carry. He had his best game of the season last week, rushing for 138 yards in the Blue Devils' loss at Stevens Point. UW-S also has the number two scoring defense (9.2), along with UW-W the only two teams in the league in single digits. Stout is also second in pass defense (129.6) and total defense (218.6). Although UW-W has given up just one sack this season, UW-Stout is the leader in sacks with 14. Defensive end Marcus Ball returned from a three game absence because of an injury to earn D3football.com Team of the Week recognition after recording three sacks, three tackles for a loss, two forced fumbles and five tackles against Point. Linebacker Jamin Ramsey has three sacks on the season and six tackles for a loss and DB Kendall Wade tops the team with three interceptions and seven passes broken up. Even at 5.0 per carry Warminski is below the team average (5.1). Carlos Concepion (6.9), Ross Carey (4.0), and Ron Fricke (6.7) add to the potent running attack. Carey, the Stout QB, is a double threat. He has completed 52% of his passes for 132.6 yards per game, with six TD's and two interceptions. Warminski is also a concern coming out of the backfield for a Carey pass, with ten catches this season. Carey's number one target is Patrick Mengelkoch (15-175-2).
Last Year's Game: Whitewater won 17-10 at Perkins Stadium. Bruce Langer (Milton/Milton), quarterbacking for an injured Jeff Donovan (Wauwatosa/East), ran eight yards to give Whitewater a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Langer also had a hand in the second TD, hooking up with Aaron Rusch (Hartford/Hartford) for a 39-yard score to make it 14-0 Whitewater at halftime. Jeff Schebler (Davenport, IA/Assumption)'s 46-yard field goal in the third upped the Warhawk margin to 17-0. Stout began a comeback with a 36-yard Kyle Martin field goal on the following possession. With 7:42 left in the game Kyle Provos dumped the ball to Nate Schoenecker from the two to pull within 17-10. The Blue Devils kept the pressure on, intercepting a pass at their own 44 on Whitewater's next possession before stalling at the Whitewater 39. Still, the Blue Devils weren't finished. Whitewater went three and out, and with 2:38 left in the game UW-S took over at their own 31. Thirteen plays later it was first and ten from Whitewater's 19. With just six seconds left a final pass attempt went incomplete.
Stout's offense had 21 first downs, while Whitewater had a season low five. The Blue Devils out-gained the Warhawks 315-236, and held on to the ball 37:00 minutes (to 23 for UW-W). Provos went 16-39 for 170 yards and the TD and INT, with seven different receivers. Langer was 8-22 for 166 yards, and also one TD and one interception for Whitewater. Rusch was the leading receiver in the game with five catches for 105 yards. Craig Warminski rushed 19 times for 57 yards for Stout, Levell Coppage (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park) 17 for 61 for Whitewater.
The teams combined for 15 punts. UW-W linebackers Jace Rindahl (Cambridge/Cambridge) and Lane Olson (Racine/Horlick) were the leading tacklers in the game with 11 apiece. Rindahl also had a tackle for a loss and a sack. Stout's Marcus Ball had two tackles for a loss and the interception, along with five tackles to lead his team.
The Record Book: UW-W placekicker Jeff Schebler (Davenport, IA/Assumption) scored eight points in the Eau Claire win, putting him one point away from tying the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III kick scoring record of 383 held by Mike Zimmerman of Mount Union College (2003-2005), and fifty away from the NCAA all division record held by Art Carmody of the University of Louisville (NCAA Football Bowl Series). Tailback Levell Coppage (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park) was named UW-W Offensive Player of the Week, WIAC Offensive Player of the Week, and one of two running backs on the D3football.com Team of the Week after carrying the ball 42 times for 386 yards last Saturday. That is the most rushing yardage in school history, and second most in the history of the WIAC. Jeff Donovan (Wauwatosa/East), at .748 with his completion percentage, could challenge the Division III record of .750 set by Greg Michelli of Mount Union last year. Donovan has thrown for ten touchdowns without an interception. Aaron Rusch (Hartford/Hartford), already among the top ten in career receptions and receiving yardage, is poised to pass a former teammate. Rusch has accumulated 2,089 yards in his career, just ten yards shy of Neil Mrkvicka (2004-2007) for fourth place in the school record book. Rusch has caught 151 passes for fifth place on that list, one reception away from Roger Gename (1973-75), three away from Joe Gerlach (1979-82) in third place, and just four away from tying Mrkvicka for second place.
National Poll: UW-Whitewater remains second in the D3football.com poll. Stout is not ranked.
