NCAA DIVISION III STAGG BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP
You've come a long way, or in this case U've (as in UW-W) come a long way. UW-Whitewater, which lost twenty-three seniors off of last year's NCAA III championship team, didn't have fans in August thinking of returning to Salem in December. UW-W went through the minefield of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a target on its back, earning a share of the league title for the fourth consecutive year.  Then UW-W won four consecutive NCAA III playoff games to set up another trip to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. And that playoff path wasn't in the comforts of their home beds and Perkins Stadium, with three trips in the five weeks totaling 8,028 miles traveled as final exams beckoned. Even in their final game, the Stagg Bowl for the national championship, UW-W came a long way, coming back from a 14-0 deficit. UW-W, in terms of the 2008 season, and as a Division III football program, the first UW-W team sport in school history to play in the final championship game its national championship four consecutive years, has indeed come a long way.

UW-W, the defending NCAA III champion, is making its fourth consecutive national tournament appearance.

The Warhawks also advanced to the Stagg Bowl in 2005 and 2006, losing to Mount Union College before defeating the Purple Raiders in the title game last year.  The Warhawks are 16-2 in the NCAA playoffs the last four years (2005-2008).

Whitewater shared the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, its fourth consecutive league crown, with UW-Stevens Point which lost a first round playoff game to Wartburg College.
