Dr. Logan Edwards

Dr. Logan Edwards is an Assistant Professor, Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), and Health Education/Teacher Education (HETE) Program Coordinator for the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. His specialty is teaching and integrating mental wellness education into traditional health education curriculums (K-12), as well as designing technological curriculum and instructional materials and applications for health education classrooms. As a health education content expert, Dr. Edwards has a keen interest in best pedagogical practices in health education; teaching mental and behavioral health skills; reforming traditional school health education practices; and training future health and physical educators at the primary, secondary, and post-secondary schooling levels how to teach complete mind-body-community health in schools and classrooms. He has designed and developed undergraduate courses on positive mental health and well-being, nutrition and fitness education, and an interpersonal communication skills training course related to openly and comfortably discussing and teaching taboo topics (mental illness, sex, and drugs) in health education settings for future health and physical educators. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in personal health; health behavior and equity; school health education and promotion; comprehensive sex education; stress management; and health behavior theory, research, and practice.

In the areas of research, service, and leadership, Dr. Edwards implements research and community service projects in the areas of mental, physical, and social health and well-being. He serves as Project Coordinator for a team that has secured a $1 million, 5-year grant for The Black Male’s Mental Health and Well-being Project in the state of Wisconsin, funded by the Wisconsin Partnership Program (WPP) at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health through its Community Impact Grants Program. He is also a Leadership Team Member for the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he trains and delivers a diversity, equity, and inclusion model of interpersonal communication skills to help students, faculty/staff, and others to better address and resolve issues of discrimination and oppression on campuses and in communities.

Dr. Edwards received his PhD in Health Behavior, with special concentrations in Mental Health and Well-being and Curriculum and Instruction from Indiana University’s School of Public Health-Bloomington. He received his Master’s degree in Education from Indiana University’s School of Education, and his Bachelor’s degree in Health Education from Indiana State University. Prior to joining UW-Whitewater’s faculty in the Fall of 2017, Dr. Edwards worked as a university-based health educator and a high school and collegiate track and field coach. He was also co-captain of his track team in college, where he competed as an NCAA Division-I track and field athlete for ISU in the 200m dash, 400m dash, 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
