Pat Miller was named head coach of the Warhawks prior to the 2001-02 season. He enters his 22nd year at the helm of the program in 2022-23.
Entering the 2021-22 season, Miller ranked 14th all-time in winning percentage among coaches with a minimum of 10 seasons coaching at the NCAA D-III level and eighth among active Division III coaches.
A four-time Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, Miller has led the Warhawks to two NCAA Division III national championships.
In 2011-12, UW-Whitewater won its first national title since 1989, when Miller was a co-captain and the Warhawks' third-leading scorer. The 2011-12 team finished 29-4 overall and 13-3 in the WIAC, winning its NCAA Tournament games by an average margin of over 14 points per contest.
Two years later, in 2013-14, UW-Whitewater won the championship with overall and conference records identical to those in 2011-12. The Warhawks were dominant through their first five games of the NCAA Tournament before defeating Williams (Mass.) in a thrilling national title game, 75-73. Quardell Young's lay-up and free throw with one second remaining was the deciding play of the contest.
Overall, Miller has led the Warhawks to six WIAC regular season championships, four league tournament titles and nine NCAA Tournament appearances. His winning percentage through the 2021-22 season (.720) ranks first all time. Miller has the most wins of any current head coach and is third in the conference's history. He achieved his 100th win during the 2005-06 season and was the second-fastest coach in WIAC history to do so.
In 2014-15, Miller earned his 300th career victory, becoming the fastest active Division III head coach to reach the milestone, doing so in just 385 games. He also became the third fastest in conference history to reach the 300-win plateau. He posted his 400th win during the 2021-22 season.
Miller has helped guide players to All-WIAC honors 63 times, including 30 first team honors and 33 honorable mention honors. He has also coached one national player of the year (Chris Davis, 2012), five WIAC Players of the Year, two Max Sparger Scholar-Athletes, seven different NCAA All-Americans and several all-region players.
Miller was an assistant coach for the team for eight years, beginning in the 1993-94 season. During his years as an assistant basketball coach, Miller also served as head coach of the women’s golf team and was an instructor in the health, physical education, recreation and coaching department. Miller was the head women’s golf coach for six seasons, beginning with the 1994-95 season. He directed the golf team to two WIAC championships (1996-97 and 1999-00) and garnered WIAC Women’s Golf Coach of the Year accolades during the team’s two championship seasons.
Miller is a 1989 graduate of UW-Whitewater and played three seasons under head coach Dave Vander Meulen. In the 1988-89 season, he was a co-captain of the team that won a national championship (the second in school history and second under Vander Meulen - the first was 1983-84). Miller enjoyed his finest season, averaging 16.6 points per game and knocking down 107-of-223 (.480) from 3-point range, the second-most attempts and third-most makes in school history. That year, he was also tabbed the WIAC Men's Basketball Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Miller ranks third in school history in three-point field goals made, and in three-point field goal percentage, as well as fourth in three-point field goals attempted. Miller was 178-of-371 from three-point range in his career, a .480 percentage.
On October 14, 2006, Coach Miller was inducted into the UW-Whitewater Athletic Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a player. he was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2019.
Miller's wife, Kirstin, is a registered nurse. The couple has a son, Benjamin, born January 2001 and a daughter, Laurel, born June 2004.
