John Handel enters his fourth season as an assistant coach for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team in 2017-18.
Handel begins his tenure on staff with the Warhawks after coaching at the high school level for 25 years. He spent five years as an assistant varsity boys coach at Badger High School in Lake Geneva, 17 years as head varsity boys coach at Elkhorn Area High School and three years as head coach at Tomahawk High School.
During his 20 years as a head coach, Handel posted a record of 250-199. As head coach at Elkhorn, Handel led the Elks to six Southern Lakes Conference championships, four regional championships and three sectional finals. He posted a 231-154 record (.600 winning percentage) at Elkhorn.
A member of the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame committee, Handel twice served on the coaching staff of the South Division 2 team at the annual WBCA All-Star Games.
Handel graduated from UW-Whitewater in 1988. He and his wife, Barb, have three children - Katie (25 years old), Maggie (22) and Connor (17).
