UW-Whitewater’s swimming facilities are located in the Williams Center, named for the school’s president who served 1946-1962. The pool, 25 yards long, seven feet deep on the starting end and over four feet on the shallow end, has six lanes for competition with the water kept at 80 degrees.
A separate diving well, thirteen feet deep, is kept at 86 degrees. Duraflex diving boards, both one and three meter, were installed in 2010. Â A scoreboard and video display was added in 2011, and dedicated to former Warhawk swim team member Tyler Slak October 29, 2011. In 2013 UW-W installed Paragon starting blocks.
The Williams Center pool, with a spectator capacity of 500, hosted the 1980 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championship, and served as the host site for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship nine times and the WIAC relay meet six times. The facility is home to Amy Spaay, UW-W’s first NCAA champion, who won the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the 2013 NCAA III championship.
The pool serves a wide spectrum of users, including physical education classes, intramurals, the general student body, the community swim team, University employees and the community at large. The office of Recreation Sports and Facilities provides Red Cross lifeguards for many pool activities.
