Softball Splits Twinbill in Kenosha

Kenosha, Wis. -- The UW-Whitewater softball team split a doubleheader at Carthage on Saturday. The Warhawks dropped the opener 6-2 before responding with a 5-0 shutout of the Firebirds.

After plating a pair of runs in the final inning of game one, UWW used that momentum to take an early lead in the nightcap. With one out in the top of the second, Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) singled through the right side. The speedy Ward booked it around the bases on a Baley Berndt (Wausau, Wis./East) double off the wall for the first run of the game. Auburn Roberson (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) followed with a phenomenal at bat. After falling down 0-2 in the count, Roberson battled off pitch after pitch. On the ninth delivery, with a full count, Roberson connected on a long ball that easily cleared the wall in left field for the two-run homer and a 3-0 Warhawk lead.

Three innings later, Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) and Rachel Radish (Merton, Wis./Arrowhead) notched back-back, one-out singles. Both moved up on a wild pitch to put two in scoring position. After a fielder's choice saw one Warhawk tagged out at home, Dani Peshia (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) and Emma Giese (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) registered consecutive RBI base knocks to bring in two. That 5-0 score held the rest of the way.

Radish was 3-4 in game two with a run scored while Berndt tallied a pair of hits in the contest. Giese reached on three of her four plate appearances in the game with a hit and two walks.

Madi DeBennette (Wadsworth, Ill./Carmel Catholic) tossed a gem. The junior scattered four hits across the complete seven inning affair while striking out to move to 4-1 on the season.

Offensively in game one, Radish and Grace Grabowy (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) had two hits each to pace the Warhawks. Josie Hammen (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) suffered the loss in the circle in 5.1 innings of work.
