Clermont, Fla. -- The UW-Whitewater softball team split a twinbill to open their annual Florida trip Sunday. The Warhawks cruised by Springfield 13-0 in five innings before dropping game two, 2-1, to Babson.
Springfield threatened with two runners in scoring position in the top of the first.
Josie Hammen (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) got out of the jam with a strike out and a ground out to bring up the Warhawk bats.
The UW-Whitewater offense quickly quashed any momentum Springfield may have had in the bottom of the frame. The Warhawks hit around the order plating seven runs in the inning.
Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) got the hit parade started with a leadoff single through the left side. Backing up speed with speed,
Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) following with a bunt single to the catcher that she legged out.
Grace Grabowy (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) sent a high pitch back up the middle for a single to center to load the bases.
Dani Peshia (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) laced a ball to left center to score three and
Emma Giese (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) followed with a walk.
UWW kept it rolling with two outs as
JJ Jakosalem (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) and
Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) launched back-to-back doubles to bring in three more. The final run came in on Ward's single up the middle for the 7-0 lead.
The Warhawks plated one in the second before registering another big inning in the third as five crossed for the 13-0 advantage.
UW-Whitewater scored 13 runs on 13 hits in the contest. Peshia and Jakosalem drove in three runs each while Ward paced UWW at the plate going 3-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Hammen picked up the win allowing a single hit while fanning three in three innings of work.
Olivia Perez (Bridgeview, Ill./Argo Community) and
Kaitlyn Marsh (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) tossed the final two innings to combine for the shutout.
In game two, Babson broke the stalemate in the third inning capitalizing on a 13-pitch at bat that ended up bringing the first run of the game in on a ground ball. Babson added another run in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead.
The Warhawks cut the advantage in half as Ward led off the inning with a single up the middle. Peshia and Giese drew back-to-back walks before
Auburn Roberson (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) drove in a run on a single to left field.
Babson got out of the jam with the next two outs and held on for the win.
Eggert, Ward, Peshia and Roberson all tallied hits in the contest for UWW.
Madi DeBennette (Wadsworth, Ill./Carmel Catholic) suffered the loss in the circle allowing a single unearned run in three innings of work.
Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) came in for the final half of the game striking out three along the way.
UW-Whitewater is back on the diamond Monday for a pair of games at 9 and 11:30 ET at Hancock Park.
