The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team fell to UW-Stout in a WIAC battle on Saturday in Kachel Gym. The Warhawks were unable to keep pace with the Blue Devils second-half shooting, falling 66-53.
The Warhawks pushed the pace in the first quarter, jumping out to a 17-11 lead after the first frame. The Warhawks connected on three of their five three-pointers in the first quarter, including a buzzer-beater triple from Brook Stenklyft to give UWW a 6-point lead.Â
In the second quarter, the Warhawks jumped out to a 31-19 lead, going on an 8-0 run to pull ahead. Stout was able to close the gap before the break with a late free throw cutting the lead to single digits.Â
Coming out of the break, the Warhawks were unable to find much momentum on the offensive end, and the Blue Devils started to heat up, making 44% of their attempts in the frame. Stout outscored UW-Whitewater 18-9 in the third quarter, making a buzzer beater lay-up to cut tie the game heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth, the Warhawks were unable to get going to stop the Blue Devils offense. Stout shot 47% from the floor in the final quarter, outscoring UW-Whitewater 21-8 to pull ahead for the victory.
Camryn Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) led UWW with 10 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Stenklyft and
Logan Lowry (Appleton, Wis./East) each added 9 points. Lowry had a team-high 6 rebounds.
Bri McCurdy (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) scored 8 points, and had a team-high four assists.Â
UW-Stout outrebounded the Warhwks on the offensive end, pulling down 16 offensive rebounds. Stout scored 18 points in second-chance attempts compared to the Warhawks nine.Â
The Warhawks head out to UW-Platteville for their next game in the conference schedule on Wednesday, February 11th. UWW will return home on Saturday, February 14th for Senior Day.
