University Heights, Ohio -- The UW-Whitewater wrestling team opened competition in a NCAA Division III Regional hosted by John Carroll Friday. 

Seven Warhawks advanced to the semifinals on day one and will battle for a spot in the championship when wrestling resumes Saturday. Those seven include sixth-ranked Justin Fortugno (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) at 141 pounds, top-ranked Dominik Mallinder (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) at 149, #14 Luke Swan (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) at 157, seventh-ranked Brayden Peet (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) at 165, Jermaine Butler (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) at 174, RJ Samuels (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) at 184 and Tyler Haydon (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) at 197. Over the course of the first day of competition, UWW wrestlers accumulated a combined record of 23-3 with eight falls, one technical fall and five major decisions. 

Wrestling is slated to resume at 10 AM with semifinals and consolation quarterfinals. Finals bouts are set to take place around 1 PM with awards to follow.
