Men's Track & Field Post Strong Showing on Home Track

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's track team hosted their last indoor meet of the season with the Midwest Elite with over 25 teams in Kachel Fieldhouse over Friday and Saturday.

On Friday night, the Warhawk distance runners kicked off the meet with the 5000m run. With more than 130 runners over seven heats, the Warhawks had 4 runners in the top 50 finishers. Dan Anderson (Eau Claire, Wis./McDonell) led the way, finishing his run at 14:22.77 for second overall in the event. Anderson's time was the sixth fastest in program history. Jonah Block (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay), set a personal best for 36th place with a 15:04.25. Alex Metko (Brillion, Wis./Brillon) and Brandon Massman (Belvidere, Ill./North) also joined in the top 50, finishing 47th and 48th, respectively. 

In the events on Saturday, the Warhawks highlighted the sprinters again, with Caleb Beightol (Belgium, Wis./Cedar Grove-Belgium) and Sam Vargas (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) topping the prelims and finals. Beightol timed in at 6.76 seconds to place first overall with Vargas placing third in the finals with a 6.89. Vargas had a personal record in qualifiers with a 6.86. 

In the 60m hurdles, Kaiden Porep (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) reached the finals for the Warhawks with a personal best 8.59 in the prelims. Porep finished 7th overall in the finals, timing in at 8.66. 

In the one-lap 200m race, the Warhawks had three runners in the top-10. Kayden Baumgart (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) led the Warhawks with a 6th place finish a personal record 22.60. Ben Bojar (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) had a personal best, timing in at 22.77 for 8th place. Traysen Thomason (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) also had a personal best, running in the same heat as Baumgart. Thomason finished 10th overall with a personal-best 22.80 second finish.

In the 400m race, the Warhawks had three in the top-five finishers. Gabe Ubert (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) had a personal best 49.71 finish to place second overall. Ubert's finish marked 8th in the Warhawks record books. Chris Kalies (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) had a season-best 49.83 for a fourth place finish. Jack Erickson (Belleville, Wis./Belleville) rounded out the top-five with his own personal best at 50.36 for fifth place. 

Drew Davey (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) earned bronze in the 800m run, timing in with a season-best 1:55.52. 

In the second longest race of the event, Kody Wassman (Ormsby, Minn./Mountain Lake) and Avery Erickson (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) finished first and second in the 3000m. Wassman had a personal-best 8:58.12 for the gold. 

The Warhawks also had success in the field events on Saturday.

In the high jump, Jer'Von Anderson (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) and Daniel Nickel (Marshall, Wis./Marshall) both surpassed the 1.97m bar to placed third overall. Nickel's mark of 1.97m was a personal best for the freshman.

Aiden Neduzak (Nekoosa, Wis./Nekoosa) won the triple jump with a personal best 13.96m leap on his third attempt of the day. Max Wallace (West Allis, Wis./Hale) had a season best 13.54m mark for fourth place. 

Over in the throws, Connor Fontaine (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) reached the finals for the Warhawks. Fontaine placed ninth overall in the shot put, with a 14.62m mark as a personal best. Jordan Jackson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) placed 10th with a 13.96m toss. Jackson also led the Warhawks in the weight throw, with a personal best 16.11m throw to place 7th overall. Landon Martin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) placed 9th with a 15.79m mark.

In the final running event of the day, the men's 4x400 relay team of Ben Heller, Jack Erickson (Belleville, Wis./Belleville), Chris Kalies (Grafton, Wis./Grafton), and Gabe Ubert (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) were the fastest grouping, winning the event with a 3:18.64 finish, the fourth fastest time in Warhawk history.

The Warhawks will compete at UW-La Crosse in the Eagle Invite next Friday, February 20th.
