The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team defeated Carthage College, 4-3, at LifeSport Athletic Club in Racine.
Keith Moeller (Dallas, Tex./DKM-I University Prep) was the decisive factor, winning the sixth singles flight to pick up the match point late Saturday night.
The Warhawks opened the match with a closely fought doubles point. UW-Whitewater and Carthage split the first two doubles flights to finish, with
Theo Billson (Lindfield, England/BHASVIC) &
Carter Michaels (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan) picking up the win at the top singles flight 7-5.
Gavin Kelleher (Brooklyn, Minn./Champlin Park) &
Charles Morgan (Naperville, Ill./Central) were unable to put the match away in a set, losing in the 5-4 & 6-5 sides as their Firebird opponents forced a tiebreaker. Kelleher & Morgan were able to maintain the momentum in the tiebreaker though, clinching the doubles point for the team with a 7-3 tiebreaker.
In the single flights, Carthage was able to tie it up with wins at the third & fourth flights, but the Warhawks picked up the second flight to even the team score.
Theo Billson (Lindfield, England/BHASVIC) put the Warhawks up 3-2 with a win at the top singles flight. Billson battled back after falling in the second set to win his match 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Gavin Kelleher (Brooklyn, Minn./Champlin Park) was the next to finish at fifth singles, but a close match went to the Firebirds to bring the team score to 3-3 and create the decisive match at the sixth singles flight with
Keith Moeller (Dallas, Tex./DKM-I University Prep).
Moeller picked up his first set 6-3, but Carthage's Luca Okino grabbed the second. After trailing 3-1 in the third set, Moeller grabbed four of the next five games to put Okino on his heels with a 5-4 Warhawk advantage. Okino was able to get to extra games, leading 6-5, but another two wins from Moeller forced a tiebreaker in the decisive match.
Moeller found himself down early in the tiebreaker, but stormed back, fending off match point on four separate occasions. The sophomore clinched the match for the Warhawks, winning three straight rallies to close out the tiebreaker with a 9-7 victory.
The Warhawks have an NCAA Division I opponent up next on the schedule, taking on Northern Illinois on Sunday, February 15th. The match is set to start at 3 PM in DeKalb.
