Box Score Stevens Point, Wis. -- The No. 8 UW-Whitewater women's basketball team used a big fourth quarter to register a 58-46 comeback win at UW-Stevens Point Wednesday evening.
The Warhawks outscored the Pointers 19-10 in the quarter, shooting 58% while holding the home squad to just 4-18 (22%) from the floor.Â
After a rough offensive start the contest, UWW got better each quarter. The Warhawks shot just 21% in the first and improved to 43% in the second, but still trailed by three, 25-22, at the intermission.Â
On the other side of the break, UW-Whitewater hit 50% of their shots to narrow the gap to just one, 38-37, heading into the fourth.Â
The teams traded buckets early in the fourth until the flood gates opened for the UWW offense and a proverbial lid was placed on the rim on the Stevens Point end. The Pointers final basket of the game came at the 5:14 mark as a layup gave UWSP the 48-45 lead. From that point, the Warhawks took over scoring the final 11 points of the contest.
Bri McCurdy (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) knocked down a triple off a
Mia Gillis (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) assist to tie the game 48-48.
Lainee Burks (Lancaster, Wis./Lancaster) made a layup to give UWW the lead for good.Â
Brooke Stenklyft (Cambridge, Wis./Cambridge) led UWW with 11 points and three assists. She was joined in double digits with 10 from Gillis.
Renee Rittmeyer (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago), McCurdy and Gillis all hauled in five rebounds to pace the Warhawks on the glass. Rittmeyer added a game-high five steals.Â
