Mallinder and Fortugno win Brackets, Warhawks 4th at Pete Willson Invite

UWW Wrestling had 2 champions, 2 runner-ups, and 1 third place finisher at Wheaton

Wheaton, Ill. -- The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater continued their outstanding wrestling at the Pete Willson Invitational in Wheaton. Out of 29 teams, the Warhawks placed 4th overall with 133 total points. UWW boasted two cahmpions, Justin Fortugno (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) at the 141-pound bracket and Dominik Mallinder (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) in the 149-pound bracket. Jordan Rasof (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) and Luke Swan (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) were both runner-ups in their respective brackets.

Fortugno reached the championship bout after a takedown in sudden victory lifted him over 12th-ranked Talan Schutte from UW-La Crosse. Fortugno then took first place in a high-scoring match against Hunter Keane from Case Western.

Mallinder defeated two ranked opponents back to back to take the crown in the 149-pound bracket. The senior Warhawk defeated 15th-ranked Landon Church from UW-Eau Claire and 5th-ranked Taylor Smith from Roanake both by 5-2 decisions to place first.

In the 133 bracket, Rasof defeated the 2nd-ranked Art Martinez in the semifinal match. After trailing 4-1 heading into the final period, Rasof recorded an early escape to close the gap. Rasof then recorded a take down as the clock hit zero to take the upset win and put himself in the championship bout. In the championship bout, Rasof fell to the 12th-ranked Jude Robson from Roanoke.

Swan was runner-up in the 157-pound bracket. Swan reached the championship match by upsetting 9th-ranked Casey Smith from Roanoke with a 2-1 decision. Swan's reversal in the second period was the difference in the low-scoring match. In the championship bout Swan faced 4th-ranked Rhenzo Auguso against Elmhurst, falling a close 5-2 decision.

Brady Phelps (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) took third place in the 125-pound bracket. Phelps fell in the semifinal match to the 2nd-ranked Mac Cafurello from Roanoke, but bounced back to take two wins with a 3-2 and 9-7 decisions. Brayden Peet (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) placed fifth in the 165-pound bracket.
