Gymnasts Shine in Home Opener

Whitewater, Wis. -- The UW-Whitewater gymnastics team topped Gustavus Adolphus 191.875-183.950 Saturday evening in Kachel Gym. The home opener kicked off a slate of three consecutive home duals for the Warhawks. 

UWW set the tone on the vault tallying a top 20 team total for the fourth straight week with a 48.175. Maliyah Pound (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) opened competition with a 9.525 followed by a 9.575 from Danielle Dudziak (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele). Siena Vavala (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada/King City Secondary School) and Sofia Spadafora (Windsor, Ontario, Canada/Saint Thomas of Villanova) registered back-to-back 9.65s to tie for second on the apparatus. Juliette Rider (San Antonio, Texas/Acellus Academy) posted a 9.775 to claim gold in the event. 

Moving to the uneven bars in the second rotation, UWW continued to grow their lead in the dual sweeping the top five spots on the leaderboard. Paige Magel (Cary, Ill./Prairie Ridge) led the way with a 9.750 followed by Elaine Copeland (Arlington, Texas/University Prep) (9.675), Jane Heffernan (Galway, Ireland/Jesus & Mary Secondary School) (9.625), Brianna Balian (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) (9.6) and Ariana Goodwin (Elgin, Ill./The Einstein Academy) (9.2). 

Magel claimed a second gold with a 9.7 on the balance beam. Heffernan secured bronze with a 9.575 with Spadafora and Rider sharing fourth with matching 9.55s. Tegan Haberstock (Alberta, Canada/National Sport School) rounded out the scoring five with a 9.425. 

In the final event of the evening, UW-Whitewater sealed the win by sweeping the top six spots on the floor exercise. Dudziak, Avery Friend (Wright City, Mo./Wright City) and Heffernan all shared first place with scores of 9.625. Haberstock tallied a 9.6 to finish fourth while Pound was fifth (9.575) and Rider sixth (9.55). 

The Warhawks return to their usual home in Russell Arena for the next two meets. UW-Whitewater will host Winona State Saturday, February 7 for the annual Kara Welsh and For a Cause Night. On Saturday, February 14, UW-Stout will visit Whitewater for Alumni Night. Both meets are set to start at 4 PM.
