Gymnasts Break Program Vault Record, Rider Claims Gold in Sacramento

Sacramento, Calif. -- The UW-Whitewater gymnastics team competed in a quad featuring three Division I programs hosted by Sacramento State Friday evening. The Warhawks finished fourth with a team total of 191.725 bolstered by a program record on the vault. 

The highlight of the evening for UW-Whitewater came in the third rotation. Juliette Rider (San Antonio, Texas/Acellus Academy) performed a phenomenal vault scoring 9.85 to secure gold in the event. Her score is tied for the third highest in program history and is the best vault score for a Division III gymnast this season. Sofia Spadafora (Windsor, Ontario, Canada/Saint Thomas of Villanova) finished among the top ten with a score of 9.725. Kaleigh Summers (Wentzville, Mo./North Point) (9.7), Siena Vavala (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada/King City Secondary School) (9.675) and Danielle Dudziak (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele) (9.65) combined with Rider and Spadafora for a team total of 48.600 to set the program record. 

UW-Whitewater posted a solid team floor rotation on the evening. Jane Heffernan (Galway, Ireland/Jesus & Mary Secondary School) paced the Warhawks with a 9.775 to claim a share of fourth place in the event. Dudziak added a 9.7 followed by a 9.675 from Avery Friend (Wright City, Mo./Wright City). Rider posted a 9.65 while Summers rounded out the scoring five with a 9.6. UWW totaled 48.400 as a team on the apparatus. 

On the uneven bars, Paige Magel (Cary, Ill./Prairie Ridge) tied for seventh with a score of 9.775 to lead the Warhawks. Elaine Copeland (Arlington, Texas/University Prep) added a 9.7 while Friend (9.675), Brianna Balian (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) (9.575) and Heffernan (9.125) wrapped up the scoring five. 

The Warhawks opened the meet on the balance beam. Caroline Haynes (McLean, Va./Trinity Christian) led off the event with a 9.725. Magel registered a 9.675 and Rider posted a score of 9.65. Friend (8.925) and Vavala (8.9) added to the UWW total on the apparatus. 

UW-Whitewater will return to Wisconsin to host their first meet of the season Saturday, January 31. The dual against Gustavus Adolphus is scheduled for a 4 PM start in Kachel Gymnasium.
