Gymnasts Secure Dual Win at Simpson

Indianola, Iowa -- The UW-Whitewater gymnastics team picked up a dual meet win at Simpson College Saturday afternoon. The Warhawks topped the Storm 191.275-188.875 in the squad's second meet against a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent this season. 

UWW opened the dual in a big way as five Warhawks finished among the top three on the uneven bars. Paige Magel (Cary, Ill./Prairie Ridge) paced UW-Whitewater with a 9.675 followed by a 9.575 from Jane Heffernan (Galway, Ireland/Jesus & Mary Secondary School) in second. Brianna Balian (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain), Kaleigh Summers (Wentzville, Mo./North Point) and Elaine Copeland (Arlington, Texas/University Prep) all tied for third with matching 9.5's. The Warhawk five combined for a team total of 47.750. 

Carleigh Moore (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) led the Warhawks on the vault. Her 9.7 secured a share of silver while three teammates swept fourth through seventh. Siena Vavala (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada/King City Secondary School) scored a 9.675 followed by Balian's 9.65 and a 9.6 from Summers. Danielle Dudziak (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele) rounded out the scoring five with a 9.55. 

UW-Whitewater used a phenomenal team performance on the floor to take a commanding lead in the dual. Juliette Rider (San Antonio, Texas/Acellus Academy) claimed gold in the event with a fantastic routine scoring 9.8. Moore was right behind with a 9.775 to secure a share of second. Tegan Haberstock (Alberta, Canada/National Sport School) added a 9.7 to share fourth while Heffernan tied for sixth with a 9.675. Avery Friend (Wright City, Mo./Wright City) rounded out the scoring crew with a 9.6 as UWW combined for a total of 48.550. 

Vavala (9.65) and Friend (9.6) led the Warhawks on the beam finishing second and third respectively on the apparatus. Rider added a 9.5 followed with a 9.125 from Magel and an 8.925 from Ashnaya Gupta (Carmel, Ind./Carmel)

UW-Whitewater is headed to warmer weather next with a trip to California on the docket. The Warhawks will compete in a quad hosted by Sacramento State on Friday, January 3rd. The meet is set to start at 6:30 Pacific Time.
