Whitewater, Wis. -- The No. 16 UW-Whitewater softball team split a doubleheader against Illinois Wesleyan in the Warhawks' home opener Thursday afternoon. UWW won the opener 4-1 before the Titans took the nightcap 3-0.
Illinois Wesleyan struck first in the first game of the day, plating a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the second.
In the bottom of the third, the Warhawks knotted the game on a
Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) single to left center that had
JJ Jakosalem (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) cruising from second to home for the tying run.
UW-Whitewater added two more in the fifth courtesy of a
Claire Kohnle (Tisch Mills, Wis./Kewaunee) solo shot to left field and a
Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) RBI double to left center to make it 3-1.
The final run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth. With Jakosalem on third, Kaitlynn Weidemann laid down a perfect bunt for the successful squeeze play and a 4-1 advantage.
Kostroski, Wickman and Kohnle each tallied two hits to lead UWW offensively. In the circle,
Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) picked up the win in relief. The junior scattered two hits across three innings of work while striking out a pair.
In the nightcap, the Titans were able to plate three in the third for the only runs of the contest. The first run crossed on a RBI single while a two-run homer plated the other two.
Kostroski and Kohnle registered hits for the Warhawks and
Josie Hammen (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) suffered the loss in the circle to move to 5-1 on the season.
UW-Whitewater's doubleheader at Augustana (IL) originally scheduled for Friday, April 4 has been rescheduled to April 12. The Warhawks will host North Central Sunday, April 6 for a doubleheader starting at 1 PM.
