Warhawks Add Two to the Win Column Wednesday

Whitewater, Wis. -- The UW-Whitewater softball team added two more to the win column Wednesday to improve to 27-5 on the season. The Warhawks topped the University of Chicago 4-2 in the opener and capped the night with a 6-3 victory.

The Maroons struck first with runs in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 advantage in the game.

Auburn Roberson (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) drew a walk in the bottom of the second and Claire Kohnle (Tisch Mills, Wis./Kewaunee) tied the game with one swing of the bat sending a deep fly ball sailing clear over the wall in left center.

The Warhawks took the lead in the next inning. Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) led off the frame with a single up the middle and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson). Emma Giese (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) hit her in with a single down the right field line to make it 3-2.

UWW added a cushion in the bottom of the fifth. Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) got the bats going with a one-out single through the left side. A Maroon miscue in a fielder's choice in the next at bat had runners on the corners. Kohnle put the pressure on the defense and another error allowed Wickman to score for the 4-2 lead.

UW-Whitewater tallied seven hits in the game - all from different Warhawks. Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) picked up the win in five innings of relief work. She fanned six while tossing a two-hit shutout to close out the game.

Chicago scored first in the nightcap plating a single run in the top of the first. Wickman absolutely crushed a ball taking an inside pitch and blasting it clear over left field for the three-run bomb and a 3-1 lead.

The Maroons came back to knot the game 3-3 with a two-RBI double in the sixth, but the Warhawk bats would not quit. In the bottom of the frame, Kohnle led off with a single up the middle and moved up 60 feet on JJ Jakosalem's (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) perfectly placed sacrifice bunt. Keira Jarrett (Evergreen Park, Ill./Mother McAuley) tagged a ball up the middle that cruised by the glove of the diving shortstop while Kohnle bolted home to give UWW a 4-3 lead. Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) took over on the base paths. With two down, Kostroski laced a double to right center as Weidemann booked it around the bases to give the Warhawks a two-run lead. Giese traded places with Kostroski on a double to left center for another RBI and a three-run advantage.

Josie Hammen (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) sent the Maroons back to the dugout in order in the top of the seventh - on three groundouts - to seal the win.

UW-Whitewater registered 11 hits in the game with Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North), Kostroski, Giese and Kohnle posting two each.

Karman Rowe (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) pitched a fantastic 5.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts. Hammen tallied the win after no-hitting the Maroons in the final 1.1 innings to improve to 12-1.
