Crawfordsville, Ind. -- The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Wrestling Team completed the NCAA Region V Wrestling Tournament hosted by Wabash College on Saturday evening. The Warhawks took second overall, tallying 142.5 total team points. Dominik Mallinder (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) and Brayden Peet (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) each secured the crown at their respective weight classes, while Jalen Dunson (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) and Gavin Kohel (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) each wrestled back to win the consolation championship and take third place. Mallinder and Peet each automatically qualified for the NCAA DIII National Championship in Rhode Island with their victories. An official announcement on other qualifiers will be released when available. 

Mallinder completed his run at 133 with two major decisions. The senior defeated Ethan Spacht from North Central 14-3 and then secured the first place spot with a 17-4 major decision over Coby Haney form Millikin, ranked 13th in the latest NWCA poll. 

Brayden Peet (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) won his weight class at 165 with two close decisions. His first match of the day was a 6-0 decision over Mawuli Nevis from the host-school Wabash. Peet than took his spot on the top of the podium after a 7-2 decision over 13th-ranked Alex Villar from North Central. 

Jalen Dunson (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) was able to wrestle his way back after falling in the semifinal round to 10th-ranked Ben Kamali from Olivet in an 11-4 decision. Dunson battled his way back into the consolation championship with a decision over Brett Stanley from John Carroll. The junior took 3rd at 125 with a decision over 15th-ranked Adrian Rosas in the consolation championship.

Gavin Kohel (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) took 3rd in the 184 weight class. Kohel opened the day in the consolation quarterfinal with a fall in 6:40 to move onto the cons. semis. Kohel rounded out the that side of the bracket with two decisions. In the 3rd place match, the sophomore took down 7th-ranked Payton Geigner from North Central in a 6-3 decision. 

Rounding out the top-five finishers for the Warhawks, Jalin Conner (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) took 4th in the 149-pound weight class. Conner lost in a sudden-victory period to 13th-ranked Tyler Herrema from Olivet in the semifinal match. But he bounced back in the wrestle-back semifinal, earning a 20-5 tech fall in 6:14 to advanced to the 3rd place match. The senior lost by decision in the match, taking 4th in the weight class.

With Mallinder and Peet securing spots in the NCAA DIII National Championship, the Warhawks will head to Providence, Rhode Island on March 14th. More information and qualifiers will be announced when available.

Friday Recap

Crawfordsville, Ind. -- The UW-Whitewater wrestling team is in second place after the first day of competition at the NCAA Region V Wrestling Tournament hosted by Wabash College. Seven Warhawks secured their spot in the semifinals Friday. The regional is set to conclude Saturday. 

The first day of the regional saw UW-Whitewater register a combined record of 19-3 with three falls, ten technical falls and two major decisions.

At 125 pounds, sixth-ranked Jalen Dunson (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) picked up a pair of technical falls to open the tournament. He needed just 8:32 to register the two wins and claim his spot in the semifinal. Dunson will take on #10 Ben Kamali (Olivet) in his semifinal bout Saturday.

Dominik Mallinder (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) added two more tech falls for UWW at 133 pounds. Ranked third nationally, Mallinder was in action for 9:10 Friday and will return to the mat for a semifinal bout against North Central's Ethan Spacht tomorrow.

At 141 pounds, #15 Evan Onstad (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) opened with a technical fall before picking up a major decision to punch his ticket to a semifinal. He is matched against Chicago's Sean Conway to open Saturday. Jalin Conner (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) ended both of his bouts early at 149 pounds Friday. He registered a pair of tech falls to advance to the semis. Conner will take on #13 Tyler Herrema of Olivet in the semis.

Luke Swan (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) added two wins to his season total with a pair of decisions to open the regional. He will take on #11 Aiden Smith of Adrian tomorrow.

The 165 pound bracket saw two more technical falls added to the Warhawk total. Ninth-ranked Brayden Peet (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) tallied his fastest in the first bout of the day, ending the match in just 3:24. His semifinal bout will be against Wabash's Mawuli Nevis.

Ryan Riser (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) registered UWW's first fall of the day. His pin in 2:40 against Luke Martin was the fastest match of the day for a Warhawk. He added a major decision in the quarterfinal and will face fifth-ranked Dejon Glaster of Millikin in the semis.

Gavin Kohel (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) (184), Evan Danowski (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) (197) and Isaak Smith (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) (285) dropped their quarterfinal bouts Friday, but each ended the day with a win in a consolation round. All three will continue their regional journey Saturday. 

North Central leads the team standings with a total of 99.0 followed by UW-Whitewater's 91.5. Millikin (71.5), Olivet (69.5) and Wabash (61.0) round out the top five.
