Stevens Point, Wis. -- The UW-Whitewater wrestling team registered six extra point victories to cruise to a 35-6 win over UW-Stevens Point Thursday evening.
The dual started in the 197-pound weight class where
Tyler Haydon (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) opened the scoring for the Warhawks. Haydon won by 3-2 decision over Owen Hansen in the first bout of the evening.
Isaak Smith (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) followed with an 11-5 decision over Michael Upson at 285.
The Pointers responded with a tight 9-7 decision in the 125-pound weight class as Luca Paladino upset
Jalen Dunson (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest).
UW-Whitewater countered in a big way with five consecutive extra point victories.
Jordan Rasof (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) provided the spark needing just 2:16 to pin George Ahles in the 133-pound bout.
Justin Fortugno (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) followed with another fall at 141. His bout ended in 3:38 with a pin of Ethan Hoyer. After a team deduction was called on UW-Whitewater, the Warhawks led 17-3 halfway through the dual.
Dominik Mallinder (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) and
Luke Swan (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) tallied back-to-back technical falls. Mallinder topped Riese Thornberry 22-6 while Swan defeated Stone Pomeroy 20-1 in 5:40. Cal Kirchner wrapped up the extra point win run with a 13-5 major decision over Caden Young at 165 pounds.
Carson Trotzer registered the lone other points for UWSP in a 5-3 decision over
Jermaine Butler (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) at 174.
Gavin Kohel (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) capped the dual with a 10-2 major decision over Easton Hull at 184.
The Warhawks are back in action in two locations Saturday. UWW will host North Central at 1 PM in Kachel Gym while a second squad heads to Iowa to take on Luther.
