The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's track and field program claimed gold at the annual Leonard "Squig" Converse Invitational that concluded Saturday in Kachel Fieldhouse.
The Warhawk men registered a team total of 154 followed by North Central (112) and UW-La Crosse (87.5).
After the final events of the heptathlon wrapped up Saturday,
Ben Bunton (Hartford, Wis./Hartford) secured third with a total of 4318 points.
Jackson Koppen (Sun Prairie, Wis./East) (4303) added fourth place points to the team total while
Josiah Cross (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) finished eighth (3715).
Caleb Beightol (Belgium, Wis./Cedar Grove-Belgium) bolstered the Warhawks Friday. In the fastest event of the day, the sophomore was flying crossing the line in 6.76 to win the event. That time is the second-fastest in program history and currently third in Division III this season.
Myles Anderson (Milwaukee, Wis./Lutheran) added a second place time of 6.86 - another top 20 mark nationally.
Andy VanZile (New Berlin, Wis./West) was fifth in the event.
VanZile also ran the 200 registering one of the most thrilling finishes on the day. The race came down to the wire with the Warhawk senior posting a time of 22.42 - a top ten time in the program record and a second place finish by just .01 Friday.
Nick McFadden (Waukesha, Wis./Pewaukee) added a fifth place finish.
Kobe Chandler (Beloit, WI/Memorial) led a four Warhawk contingent to finish among the top eight in the 400. Chandler's 50.17 was tops at the meet and is a top ten mark in the UWW history book.
Chris Kalies (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) added a third place time of 50.68 followed by
Brad Heller's (Brookfield, WI/East) 50.87 for fourth while
Jack Erickson (Belleville, Wis./) was sixth.
Marlon Cystrunk (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) posted a top 20 time in Division III to win the 60-meter hurdles crossing the line in 8.18.
Tamir Thomas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) (8.58) and
Tristan Ropiak (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) (8.69) claimed fifth and sixth respectively.
Drew Davey (Elkhorn, WI/) added another gold for UW-Whitewater. His time of 1:58.44 won the 800 while teammates
Josh Anhalt (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and
Colin Lewandowski (Elmhurst, Ill./York) finished fifth and seventh respectively.
Three Warhawks finished in the top eight in the 3000 - all with personal bests - led by
Tucker Johnson's (Poynette, Wis./) third place time of 8:36.96.
Alex Metko (Brillion, Wis./) was less than two seconds back in fourth followed by Conner Murphy in sixth.
Landen Bratt (Waukesha, Wis./West) (mile, 4:22.83) and
Lincoln Begin (Greenfield, Wis./) (long jump, 6.86 meters) posted third place finishes while
Jared Sudbrink (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) (high jump, 1.88 meters),
Sean Larsen (Waukesha, Wis./South) (weight throw, 16.83 meters) and
Max Wallace (West Allis, Wis./Hale) (triple jump, 13.71 meters) added fifth, sixth and eighth place points to the team total.
UW-Whitewater capped the meet with the top time in the 4x400 relay. Heller led off the squad that also featured Erickson, Kalies and Chandler for a time of 3:25.42.
