The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team registered the ninth highest score in program history in a 192.275-189.425 win over Simpson College Saturday evening in Whitewater. The Warhawks honored the athletes' parents, 10.0 club members and teammate
Kara Welsh (Plainfield, Ill./Central) during the meet.
A Warhawk stood atop the podium in each event.
Carleigh Moore (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) claimed the top spot on the vault with a 9.775 - the top score across all events on the evening.
Brianna Balian (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) added a 9.675 followed by
Alayna Fern's (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) 9.65,
Ava Pesch's (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) 9.6 and
Danielle Dudziak's (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele) 9.55 as UWW swept third through sixth.
UW-Whitewater swept the podium on the bars as
Ariana Goodwin (Elgin, Ill./The Einstein Academy) registered the top score for the night - 9.675.
Carley Scott (Oak Grove, Mo./Grain Valley) and
Hayden Gough (Dallas, Texas/Dallas International School) posted matching 9.65's to tie for second while Pesch shared fourth with a 9.6.
Paige Magel (Cary, Ill./Prairie Ridge) rounded out UWW's scoring five with a 9.475.
On the balance beam, it was
Chloe Hammond (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) that secured gold with a 9.75.
Kristen Swiebocki (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) tied for third with a 9.675 with
Tegan Haberstock (Alberta, Canada/National Sport School) finishing sixth with a 9.575.
Sofia Spadafora (Windsor, Ontario, Canada/Saint Thomas of Villanova) and
Kelsey Kollhoff (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) added a 9.525 and 9.5 to the team's total respectively.
Kollhoff closed the meet with the best score on the floor Saturday registering a 9.75. Haberstock claimed silver with a 9.675 and Moore took fourth with a 9.6. Hammond shared with with a score of 9.55 followed by a 9.5 from Dudziak.
Following the meet, the Warhawks honored their teammate lost tragically in August.
Kara Welsh (Plainfield, Ill./Central) was a two-time All-American and both a WIAC and NCGA national champion on the vault. Her gymnastic ability was as big and powerful as her personality. In addition to her athletic accomplishments, UW-Whitewater presented Kara's family with a certificate recognizing her academic achievements. UWW also accepted donations to benefit the
