Warhawks Drop Two in Chicago

The No. 15 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team dropped a twinbill at the University of Chicago Wednesday afternoon. The Warhawks lost the opener 5-4 and the nightcap 9-1 in six innings.

The opener Wednesday was a back-and-forth game with the Maroons taking the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Meghan Dunning (Plainfield, Ill./South) cut the lead in half with a solo shot to center field in the third. Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) followed suit with a four-bagger in the fourth to knot the game 2-2.

UWW claimed the lead in the fifth. Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) drew a one-out walk and Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) tagged a double to left center in the next at bat. Chicago pitched around Wickman to load the bases and Maddy Anderson (Waukesha, Wis./North) found some green in front of the right fielder to plate one.

The Maroons responded in their half of the frame with two runs on three hits to retake the advantage 4-3.

After a scoreless sixth, Wickman tied the game once more in the top of the seventh with her second homerun of the day, this one to center.

Chicago ledoff the bottom of the seventh with a single. After a popup to shortstop for the first out, a walk and single loaded the bases. A fly out nearly had the Warhawks out of the jam but the next Maroon sent a deep ball to left field that was nearly snagged at the fence but fell in for a RBI single.

The Warhawks blasted 10 hits in the game including five for extra bases. Wickman was 2-3 with the pair of homers for two RBI and two runs scored. Anderson was 2-4 in the batter's box.

Anderson went four innings striking out seven while walking two. Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) suffered the loss in the final 2.2 innings of work.

Chicago took a big lead early in game two jumping out to a 6-0 advantage after three innings.

UWW got one run back in the top of the sixth after Dunning opened the frame with a single to left field. She moved to second on a groundout and to third on a wild pitch before scoring on another groundout.

The Maroons came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to end the game.

Eggert and Dunning each registered two hits in the game to lead the Warhawks offensively.

Kate Cleveland (DePere, Wis./Ashwaubenon) suffered the loss in the circle in 2.1 innings pitched.
