Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Warhawk Women Fall to Blue Devils on the Road

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team fell to UW-Stout 69-60 on the road Saturday afternoon.

The free throw line was a key component of the game Saturday. UW-Stout hit 30-40 from the charity stripe while the Warhawks were 11-19.

After UWS scored the opening basket, UW-Whitewater went on a 10-1 run bolstered by three-pointers from Bri McCurdy (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) and Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) to take a 10-4 lead in the game at the halfway point of the first quarter. A last second Blue Devil triple narrowed the gap to 15-12 in favor of UWW at the end of the first.

A quick five-point swing in the middle of the second courtesy of a Lunden Alexander (Dolton, Ill./Thornwood) three-pointer and Renee Rittmeyer (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) layup gave the Warhawks their largest lead of the game, 25-16. The Blue Devils cut the lead to three with under a minute to play, but McCurdy rounded out the scoring in the period with a pair of free throws to send UWW into the locker room with a 32-27 lead.

On the other side of the break, the UW-Whitewater offense went cold as the Warhawks hit just 25-percent of their shots in the third. Meanwhile, UWS hit over 45-percent of their opportunities from the floor and added 8-14 from the free throw line. A 20-10 sway in scoring in the quarter had the Blue Devils taking a 47-42 lead into the final period.

Stout sealed the game from the charity stripe in the fourth.

Grundahl paced the Warhawks with a double-double scoring 19 points and adding 11 rebounds. She added a pair of assists and three steals. Alexander ended with 15 after dropping in 11 in the first half.

UW-Whitewater is currently second in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 7-3 record. Oshkosh leads the league, 8-2, with UW-Platteville holding third at 6-4.
