The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team fell to UW-River Falls in the regular season finale, 58-66. The Warhawks battled back from a 13 point deficit, but were unable to catch up to the Falcons in the end.
Before the game began, the Warhawks recognized their 7 seniors, Manager Logan McCarley,
James Kelley (Milwaukee, WI/St. John's Northwestern Military Academy),
Cliff McCray (Madison, Wis./West),
Delvin Barnstable (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Lutheran),
Drew Fisher (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc),
Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland), and
Will Pytleski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest). The Warhawks also recognized Derek Gray as an honorary senior.
To tip-off the game, the Warhawks and Falcons traded three-pointers quickly, but the Falcons had the upper hand, connecting on 50% of their shots behind the arc in the first half. The Falcons finished out the first half with two more three-pointers, taking a 33-25 led at the break.Â
Another three pointer to open up the second half for the Falcons gave them a 9-0 run between the break. UWRF grew their lead to 13 points, but the Warhawks worked on battling back to close down the lead.Â
In the final few minutes of the game, the Warhawk defense came up with big stops while the offense converted on the other end. With just a two-possession game, UWW looked to take back control of the game, but the Falcons kept pace with the offense, matching the Warhawks second half points.Â
After a 33-33 second half, the Falcons remained on top with their first half lead, taking the 66-58 victory.
Three seniors led the way in scoring for the Warhawks on senior night.
Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) scored 18 points, with
Delvin Barnstable (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Lutheran) and
James Kelley (Milwaukee, WI/St. John's Northwestern Military Academy) each adding in 12 points each.Â
Chislom and Barnstable stayed strong on the defensive end, as Chislom swatted away two shots and Barnstable recorded a team-high four steals and three blocks.
With the conclusion of the regular season, the Warhawks will look towards the WIAC playoffs. The Warhawks will take on UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday, February 20th. The host site will be determined after the conclusion of the UW-Stevens Point vs. UW-Oshkosh game.Â
