The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team finished sixth in a field of 19 teams at the 60th annual North Central College Invitational Saturday.
Dominik Mallinder (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) claimed gold at 133 pounds with
Evan Onstad (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) finishing as the runner-up at 141 and
Jalen Dunson (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) taking third at 125.
Mallinder, ranked fourth according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association, bolstered the Warhawks' finish Saturday claiming the title at 133 pounds. After opening with a bye, Mallinder took his first bout by fall in 3:39. He followed with a technical fall (18-2) and a major decision (15-3) to secure his spot in the finals. Mallinder trailed second-ranked Jaden Hinton of Baldwin Wallace 9-2 after the first period. He battled back in the second period with a takedown and a four-point nearfall to take the lead, 10-9. Hinton tied the bout 10-10 with an escape but Mallinder's takedown with 1:31 on the clock in the third plus riding time secured the 14-10 decision.
Onstad finished as the runner-up at 141-pounds after falling to fifth-ranked James Rodriguez (Castleton) by 8-6 decision in the championship. Onstad took the early lead in the bout with a takedown with Rodriguez earning the single point for an escape by the end of the first. The Warhawk held a 5-4 advantage after the second period. Rodriguez chose the bottom position and got the quick escape to tie the bout. Onstad was able to escape from a takedown with just over 30 seconds left but was unable to get the takedown in the final 20 seconds for the final. En route to the championship, Onstad tallied a technical fall (20-3) and a pair of major decisions (17-4, 9-1).
Dunson captured bronze in the 125-pound bracket. Opening with a technical fall (21-6), Dunson won the quarterfinal bout 15-14 before dropping the semifinal 8-5 to fifth-ranked Gavin Bradley of Castleton. He capped the day with back-to-back major decisions including a 13-4 win over Augsburg's Keno Vanier. In that bout, Dunson tallied a pair of takedowns to lead 6-1 after the first period. After no points were scored in the second, Dunson added two more takedowns and riding time for the final.
A pair of Warhawks added sixth-place points to the team total. At 125 pounds,
Luke Berktold (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) went 3-3 on the day. Two of his losses came against a sixth-ranked wrestler from Augsburg.
Jalin Conner (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) (149 pounds) also went 3-3 with an injury forcing an early end to his second-to-last bout on the day.
