The No. 4 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team kicked off the 2024-25 campaign with a 64-58 win over No. 24 DePauw University in the first game of the Warhawk Tipoff Classic in Kachel Gym Friday evening.
The Warhawks shot over 50-percent from the floor in their first contest on the hardwood this season. The third quarter was stellar for UWW as the Warhawks hit 6-9 (67%) from the field while the defense held the Tigers to just 3-12 (25%) from the floor. In the third, UW-Whitewater went on 13-2 run to build a 13-point, 47-34, advantage.
A
Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) three-pointer opened the fourth. Less than a minute later
Mallory Oloffson (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) knocked down a layup to give the Warhawks their largest lead of the game, 56-39.
From that point, DePauw whittled away at the lead, cutting the margin to six with a minute to go, but UWW held on for the win.
Carollo led the Warhawks with 19 points on 6-12 from the field, 3-7 from deep and 4-4 from the free throw line.
Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest) added 11 points while Oloffson and
Logan Lowry (Appleton, Wis./East) each had 9. UWW spread the wealth around in the rebound column with four players recording four each.
UW-Whitewater wraps up play in the tournament Saturday against Lakeland. Tipoff is set for 1 PM.
