The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team fell to No. 11 Johnson & Wales 19-16 in Rhode Island Friday afternoon.
The match opened with the 285-pound weight class where JWU's seventh-ranked Adolfo Betancur defeated
Isaak Smith (Rockton, Ill.) by 9-4 decision.
JWU took an 8-0 lead in the match with a technical fall at 125 pounds.
Luke Berktold (Libertyville, Ill.) fell to second-ranked Joziah Fry 19-4 in the bout. At 133 pounds, fourth-ranked
Dominik Mallinder (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) dropped a close 10-8 decision to Peyton Ellis. A technical fall at 141 pounds extended the JWU advantage to 16-0. In that battle,
Justin Fortugno (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) fell to Cameron Soda 17-2.
Jalin Conner (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) picked up the first win for the Warhawks Friday with a 9-1 major decision at 149 pounds over Luke Montefusco. JWU responded with a major of their own at 157 pounds as seventh-ranked Hayden Brown topped
Luke Swan (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) 8-0 to push the margin to 20-4.
From that point, UW-Whitewater ran the table.
Scott Busse (Chicago, Ill./Lake Zurich) defeated jack Richardson 4-1 at 165 pounds followed by a
Brayden Peet (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) 8-4 decision over Michael Schliem. JWU was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct in the 174 pound bout for a 1.0 deduction to make it 19-10.
At 184 pounds,
Gavin Kohel (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) battled to a 2-1 decision over Zachary Miller.
Evan Danowski (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) capped the meet with an 11-5 decision over Ky'ell roper at 197 pounds.
The Warhawks will compete in both the Roger Williams Invite in Providence, Rhode Island and the Luther Open in Decorah, Iowa Saturday.
