The No. 4 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team topped UW-Eau Claire 66-53 on the road Saturday evening. The Warhawks remain undefeated on the season, 13-0, and boast a 2-0 record in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
UWW capitalized on a 10-point first quarter advantage, 19-9. The Warhawks shot under 40-percent from the field but hit three triples in the first ten minutes to push the gap into double digits. UW-Whitewater scored the first 11 points of the contest bolstered by a pair of three-pointers from
Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest) and the Warhawks held the advantage the rest of the way.
In the third quarter, the Blugolds were able to narrow the margin to five, 44-39, with 3:55 on the clock but that's as close as the Warhawks would allow. UWW closed the quarter on a 6-2 run to push the lead back to nine. The Warhawks won the fourth quarter, outscoring UWEC 16-12 for the 13-point win.
UW-Whitewater won the battle inside and capitalized on turnovers en route to the win. UWW outscored Eau Claire 32-20 in points in the paint and 21-12 in points off turnovers in the game.
Four Warhawks registered double digits in the scoring column led by
Aleah Grundahl's (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) 17 on 8-11 from the floor.
Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) dropped in 14 adding eight rebounds, five assists and five steals in the contest.
Katie Hildebrandt (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) posted 13 points and was a single board shy of a double-double. Trautsch rounded out the top scorers with 11.
