University of Wisconsin-Whitewater student-athletes
Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) and
Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington) were honored as the 2022-23 Warhawk Student-Athletes of the Year at the annual Campus Awards coordinated by the campus Career and Leadership Development office.
Grundahl is a member of the women's basketball team, while Shinhoster is a wrestler for UWW.
The duo was recognized for demonstrating the essence of a student-athlete at the NCAA Division III level, exemplifying what it means to be a student-athlete at UW-Whitewater by displaying excellence in the classroom, during competition, and in the community.
A four-time All-American at UWW, during the 2022-23 season Grundahl helped lead the Warhawks to the program's 11
th WIAC regular season title on the way to winning the conference tournament. The Warhawks made their 21
st appearance in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals.
Grundahl received an abundance of awards and honors for her exceptional performance on the court this season, where the senior forward ranked in the top 10 in seven categories including points per game, field goal percentage, steals, and blocks.
Earlier this year, she was named First Team All-American by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association as well as Third Team All-American and Region 9 Player of the year by d3hoops.com. She was also named the to the WBCA Division III All-Star Team.
The state of Wisconsin also added to Grundahl's accolades. For the second consecutive year, she was named Player of the Year by the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association honored her as Division III Public Player of the Year.
Grundahl is majoring in early childhood education.
Shinhoster became the third Warhawk wrestler in program history to win back-to-back national titles, becoming NCAA Division III National Champion at 184 pounds in 2022 and 2023. At the NCAA Championships he was recognized as 2023 NCAA Division III Wrestler of the Tournament and d3wrestle.com named him its Wrestler of the Year.
The titles and awards followed a dominant season for Shinhoster, one that saw him earn top seeding at the national championship. He was 33-2 during the 2022-23 season and recorded 16 falls, 3 technical falls, and 7 major decisions. He was also the first Division III wrestler to advance to the finals at Midlands since 2010.
WIAC and head coaches honored Shinhoster for his remarkable season. He was named Division III Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, the program's first five-time NWCA Scholar All-American. He was also the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Shinhoster is majoring in general management.
