The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team posted its fifth win in the last six games and improved to 8-1 in true road games for the season Saturday with an 89-77 victory at UW-Eau Claire in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest.
The Warhawks (16-6 overall, 7-4 WIAC) maintain their third place standing in the league with three games to play in the regular season.
Miles Barnstable (Sheboygan, Wis./Howards Grove) poured in a game-high 29 points to lead UW-Whitewater, which shot 63.8 percent (30-of-47) from the floor, including 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from 3-point range.
Jameer Barker (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) registered 20 points and was one of five Warhawks in double figures in scoring.
Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) collected 11 points and five rebounds,
Carter Capstran (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) tallied 10 points, five rebounds and two steals, and
Delvin Barnstable (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Lutheran) added 10 points and five rebounds.
Elijah Lambert (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) added eight points off the bench.
UW-W built a 16-point halftime lead, holding the Blugolds (13-9, 5-6) to 43.8 percent shooting in the opening period.
UW-Whitewater held a 21-9 advantage with 13:12 on the clock following a pair of free throws by Chislom. UW-Eau Claire rallied to draw within four at the midway point of the half.
A 14-0 run punctuated by a 3-pointer from Barker gave the Warhawks a 39-20 lead with 5:39 to play in the period. The Blugolds chipped away at the lead, but a free throw by
Drew Fisher (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) and a layup by Lambert in the final 15 seconds gave UW-W its 16-point halftime advantage.
UW-Whitewater built its lead to 26 on a pair of free throws by Miles Barnstnable with 15:11 to play in the second half. UW-Eau Claire drew to within 10 with 6:13 remaining but was unable to bring its deficit to single digits until the 1:40 mark.
The Warhawks knocked down 6-of-8 from the free-throw line over the final 1:35 of regulation and finished the game shooting 19-of-26 from the line, making more than UW-EC attempted (17).
UW-Whitewater hosts No. 23 UW-Oshkosh Wednesday at Kachel Gymnasium. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
