The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team stunned eleventh-ranked UW-Oshkosh on their home court topping the Titans 92-79 to claim the program's fifth Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament title in program history Sunday.
UW-Whitewater secured the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament with the win. The Warhawks will make their 22nd appearance in the national tournament next week. The complete tournament field including host sites will be announced during the 2023 NCAA Selection Show scheduled for 12 pm Central Monday, February 27 on NCAA.com.
The first 14 minutes was exactly what was expected from a championship game, back-and-forth with the teams trading small runs. With the score knotted at 32 with 5:31 on the clock,
Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) sparked a Warhawk run. From that point, UWW rattled off 14 of the next 17 points to give the Warhawks a 46-35 lead at the break. Five Warhawks scored in that span.
Chislom had the hot hand in the first half draining 18 points by the break.
The UW-Whitewater lead remained in double figures until an 8-0 Titan spurt cut the margin to five, 55-50, with 13:34 remaining. Six minutes later, UW-Oshkosh knocked down a three-pointer to pull within three, 68-65, with 7:11 on the clock.
Chislom had the immediate response with a triple for the Warhawks followed by a
Delvin Barnstable (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Lutheran) defensive board and layup on the offensive end that pushed the lead back to eight. Barnstable and Carter Captran nailed back-to-back three's to extend the advantage back into double figures with less than four to go, 79-67.
The UWW lead never dipped below nine points the rest of the way.
The Warhawks shot 50-percent from the floor and 44-percent from long range while the UWW defense held the Titans to 38-percent from the field and 31-percent from deep.
Chislom led all players with 29 points leading a contingent of five Warhawks in double figures. He was 11-19 from the floor and 3-5 from long range while hauling in nine rebounds and dishing out three assists.
Delvin Barnstable (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Lutheran) hit 7-12 from the field for 18 points while
Miles Barnstable (Sheboygan, Wis./Howards Grove) had 14.
Jameer Barker (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) was 4-9 from the floor for 14 points adding a team-high four assists. Capstran registered a double-double with 13 points and 14 boards in the game.
Purple reigned on Championship Sunday as the Warhawk women's team defeated UW-Eau Claire in Kachel Gym to claim their spot in the national tournament. For the first time since 2017, both UWW basketball teams will compete in the Division III Tournament scheduled to begin next week.
