Gymnasts Edge Stout on the Road

The Warhawk Gymnastics team outshined the UW-Stout Blue Devils on three out of four events Friday night in a narrow win, 189.550-189.175.

UW-Whitewater began on the uneven bars where they claimed the top four spots. Junior Estee Flom (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) and sophomore Richella Velarmino (Bonney Lake, Wash./John R. Rogers) shared first place with a 9.5 each. Junior Taiya Stelmachowski (Plainfield, Ill./Central) and freshman Elaine Copeland (Arlington, Texas/University Prep) followed up with matching 9.475s. Freshman Danielle Dudziak's (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele) 9.275 was the fifth score counted to total a 47.225 for the event.

On the vault, Carleigh Moore (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) lead the Warhawks. The freshman posted a 9.55 to earn first place. Sophomore Kara Welsh (Plainfield, Ill./Central) was close behind in second place with a 9.525. The other four Warhawk vaulters were right on each other's heels. Copeland had a 9.425 while Faith Mylin (Elgin, Ill./Harvest Christian Academy) and senior Meg McGinley (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) each tacked on a 9.375 to bring the vault team score to a 47.250.

Floor was a strong rotation for the Warhawks. Junior Kelsey Kollhoff (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) earned first place with a 9.675. Mylin was close behind with a 9.65 which was good for second place in the meet. Moore placed third with a 9.625. Copeland chipped in a 9.525, her best so far this season, while Welsh added a 9.45 to the team total to give the Warhawks a 47.925 on the event.

The balance beam has challenged UWW this season, but not this time. Freshman Tegan Haberstock (Alberta, Canada/National Sport School) led the Warhawks with a 9.625, which was good enough for a third place finish, and a personal best. Kollhoff and Velarmino contributed a 9.525 and a 9.45 respectively with their hit routines. Freshman Shannon Chase (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) made her collegiate debut with a solid routine to earn her a 9.375. Mylin tacked on a 9.175 to give the Warhawks a 47.100 total on the beam.

The Warhawks continue their 2023 campaign on the road next weekend as they take on the UW-La Crosse Eagles in La Crosse Friday, February 17th at 6:30pm.
