Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warhawk Men Hold On to Beat Pointers on the Road

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team held on to a late lead to register a 79-76 win at UW-Stevens Point Wednesday night.

The game went back-and-forth from start to finish with ten ties but only three lead changes in the contest. The difference came on the glass as the Warhawks enjoyed a 37-24 advantage in rebounds that led to a 20-7 sway in second chance points. Free throws were also pivotal with UWW hitting 17-20 and UWSP going 10-17 from the charity stripe.

The Warhawks' two-point halftime lead was quickly wiped away to start the second half. After the teams exchanged a few buckets, UW-Whitewater put together a run to build an eight-point lead, 49-41, with 15:21 on the clock. The Pointers countered with an 11-3 spurt to knot the game 52-52 in less than three minutes of action.

A series of small runs had UWW leading by six before UWSP would battle back to tie it 68-68 with under six remaining. The Warhawks gradually built a five-point advantage, 74-69 with 3:11 on the clock.

UW-Stevens Point knocked down a layup to cut the lead to three before JT Hoytink (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) hit a jumper to push the lead back to five with 1:47 to go.

Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) negated a Pointer jumper with a triple with 57 seconds left to make it 79-73. UWSP nailed a triple of their own with 42 seconds on the clock to make it 79-76. A missed free throw gave the Pointers a chance and they heaved up a pair of three's but neither dropped in as the Warhawks held on for the win.

Drew Fisher (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) led the Warhawks with 18 points bolstered by a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. He made it a double-double with a game high ten boards. Jameer Barker (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) added 16 points on 6-9 from the floor and 2-3 from deep. Delvin Barnstable (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Lutheran) and Chislom rounded out the double digit scorers with 13 each. Barnstable and Barker combined for seven assists in the game.
