John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) and
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis closed a fantastic 2021-22 season Friday at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Zakowski finished 1-1 for the day in singles, reaching the Round of 16 with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 triumph against Arjun Asokumar of Chicago. He was outlasted 7-5, 7-6 (2) by No. 6 seed Jhonny Acosta of North Carolina Wesleyan in his second-round match.
Zakowski, who had already reached All-America standing prior to Friday's opening-round win, finished his debut season as a Warhawk with a 24-10 singles record.
In a doubles rematch from the third round of the NCAA Tournament, Gray and Zakowski wrapped up the day for UW-Whitewater with a 6-3, 6-3 loss against second-seeded James Hopper and Jonathan Powell of Case Western Reserve. Gray and Zakowski had won the previous meeting by an 8-7 (3) score in the Warhawks' third round dual of the national team tournament.
Gray and Zakowski finish the 2021-22 campaign with a 26-9 record. Both earned All-America accolades by winning the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional in the fall. Zakowski also claimed the singles title at the regional tournament for All-America honors in singles.
