Softball Drops Doubleheader at UW-La Crosse

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team started a four-game road trip to the western part of the state Monday with back-to-back losses at UW-La Crosse in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.

The Warhawks (17-17 overall, 5-7 WIAC) dropped the first game 4-0 before being edged 3-2 in the second.

In Game 2, UW-Whitewater put the tying run in scoring position with one out in the top of the seventh but was unable to send the game to extra innings.

Left fielder Krista Sbarra (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) plated a run in the second and reached base four times with two hits and two walks. Designated player Sophia Kinjerski (Maribel, Wis./Denmark) tied the game with a run-scoring single in the sixth and added one walk and one run scored. First baseman Ally Dietz (Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes Community) collected two hits and third baseman Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) tallied one hit.

Pitcher Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) took the loss and is now 5-4 on the year. She allowed one run over 5 1/3 innings in relief of starter Kate Cleveland (DePere, Wis./Ashwaubenon), who recorded the first two outs of the game.

Both teams left eight runners on base in the contest.

In the opener, the Eagles (25-8, 13-1) posted one run in the bottom of the third and three more in the fifth. The Warhawks left six runners on base, including two each in the second and third frames.

Sbarra, Kinjerski, Wickman, shortstop Meghan Dunning (Plainfield, Ill./South) and centerfielder Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) each finished with one hit to lead the offense.

Pitcher Mallory Hollatz (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) dropped to 7-8 on the year, tossing all six innings.

UW-Whitewater concludes the regular season Tuesday at UW-Eau Claire. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
