Softball Splits on Day 2 at Illinois Wesleyan

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team combined superb pitching with a timely hit Sunday afternoon for a 3-1 victory against Illinois College in a non-conference contest on the second day of the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament.

The Warhawks (7-7 overall) dropped their first game of the day by a 5-2 score against Illinois Wesleyan.

Against Illinois College (6-9), Kate Cleveland (DePere, Wis./Ashwaubenon) tossed a complete game and first baseman Kendall Klatt (Kildeer, Ill./Mundelein) socked a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning to give UW-W the lead for good.

Cleveland (2-0) scattered five hits and struck out three batters without issuing a walk.

Klatt's homer, her second of the season, plated left fielder Krista Sbarra (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) and right fielder Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) with one out in the fourth.

In the game against Illinois Wesleyan (11-7), the Warhawks drew to within 3-2 after scoring twice in the top of the sixth, but the Titans responded with two in the bottom of the frame to retake a three-run advantage.

Third baseman Brooke Mangler (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) recorded one hit and one run scored. Centerfielder Meghan Dunning (Plainfield, Ill./South) posted one hit and one run scored, and Sbarra, Kostroski and Klatt each tallied hits.

Mallory Hollatz (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) took the loss on the mound, falling to 4-3 after pitching the first four innings. Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Annie Morelli (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) each pitched one inning in relief.

UW-Whitewater begins Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Wednesday at UW-Platteville. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 3 p.m.
