Softball Picks Up Two Conference Wins

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team posted a pair of shutout victories Sunday against UW-Stout in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at van Steenderen Softball Complex.

The Warhawks (10-10 overall, 3-3 WIAC) downed the Blue Devils 2-0 in the opener before posting an 8-0 triumph in five innings in the second game.

In Game 1, Kate Cleveland (DePere, Wis./Ashwaubenon) tossed a complete-game shutout, striking out six over seven innings to improve to 4-1 on the year. She pitched out of a first-and-third jam in the fourth and allowed only one base runner the rest of the way.

Meghan Dunning (Plainfield, Ill./South) lined her second home run of the weekend over the fence in the right field corner to provide what held as the game-winning run in the bottom of the second inning.

UW-W doubled its lead in the bottom of the fourth on a safety squeeze by second baseman Brooke Mangler (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township).

Centerfielder Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson), designated player Sydney Anderson (Delavan, Wis./Delavan-Darien) and left fielder Krista Sbarra (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) each added hits for the Warhawks.

In the nightcap, UW-Whitewater blasted three home runs and plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the contest by run rule.

Pitcher Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) struck out six over five shutout innings to improve to 2-3 on the season, scattering five hits by UW-Stout (10-14, 0-4).

The Warhawks got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. Dunning mashed her second homer of the doubleheader with a solo shot to center. Three batters later, catcher Kennedy Cox (Janesville, Wis./Craig) knocked a two-run homer to left to increase the UW-W lead to 3-0.

UW-Whitewater plated three more in the bottom of the fourth. First baseman Brooke Mangler (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) homered with one out to start the scoring. Third baseman Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) singled to left to drive in another run before designated player Maddie Koenings (West Bend, Wis./West) hit a run-scoring groundout to short to increase the advantage to 6-0.

In the fifth, Mangler drove a base hit up the middle with the bases loaded to knock in two runs and give the Warhawks the win.

UW-Whitewater hosts UW-Oshkosh Friday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. UW-W will recognize Kennedy Cox (Janesville, Wis./Craig) and Annie Morelli (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) on Senior Day presented by Educators Credit Union.
