The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team took control of its first-round game in the 2022 NCAA Division III Championship with a big second quarter Friday night on its way to a 58-34 win against Ripon at Kachel Gymnasium.

With the victory, the Warhawks (24-4 overall) move on to face Illinois Wesleyan in the second round on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Kachel Gymnasium. Illinois Wesleyan topped DePauw (Ind.) in Friday's regional opener by a 56-55 score.

Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) and Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) tallied 15 points apiece to lead UW-W, which scored 24 points off 27 Red Hawk turnovers. Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five assists and four blocks.

Neither team shot above 30 percent in the opening quarter, which ended in an 8-8 tie.

The Warhawks heated up in the second, turning a 10-10 tie into a 23-12 lead just past the midway point of the quarter on a driving layup by Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest).

The Red Hawks closed to within seven with 2:41 on the clock before UW-W ended the period on an 8-0 run, including back-to-back 3-pointers by Carollo, for a 31-16 halftime advantage.

UW-Whitewater built its lead to 18 at the 6:38 mark in the third quarter on a free throw by Yssa Sto. Domingo (Streamwood, Ill./St. Edward). The advantage grew as high as 19 points as UW-W took a 43-27 lead into the fourth.

Ripon narrowed its deficit to 15 in the opening minute of the fourth, but the Warhawks responded with an 11-0 run capped by a layup from Carollo to take a 56-30 lead with 4:35 remaining.
