The 2022 national championship game marks UW-Whitewater's second appearance in the Division III title contest. The Warhawks were defeated 69-51 by DePauw (Ind.) in the 2013 national championship game after a thrilling 64-62 overtime win in the semifinals on game-tying and game-winning buzzer beaters at the end of regulation and overtime by UW-W guard Mary Merg. Each of the team's last two semifinal victories have come against Amherst.
Â
The Warhawks (28-4 overall) are in the midst of their 20th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and fourth trip to the Final Four since 2008. UW-W has played in 13 NCAA Tournaments since 2007, tied for the fourth most in NCAA Division III. The team made one Final Four appearance as a member of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Division III in 1982.
Â
Saturday's game is the fifth meeting between UW-Whitewater and Hope (31-1). The Dutch have won three of the four matchups. The last two games in the series have been played in the NCAA Tournament, most recently in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament, when Hope defeated UW-W 78-71 in Holland, Mich. In 2013, the Warhawks topped the Dutch 65-60 in the NCAA Whitewater Sectional final to punch their ticket to the Final Four. Other results include Dutch victories on Dec. 30, 2003, in Kalamazoo, Mich. (91-54) and on Dec. 15, 2012, at Hope (63-52).
