The No. 9/11 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team hosts UW-Eau Claire Friday at 7 p.m. for the championship game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament (presented by Culver's) at Kachel Gymnasium.
Tickets for Friday's game can be purchased at the door. Admission cost is $8 for adults and $5 for youth and seniors (65+). Entry is free for UW-Whitewater students courtesy of Warhawk Athletics. The first 100 students to enter the gym will receive a complimentary Warhawk t-shirt courtesy of DLK Enterprises.
The winner of Friday night's game will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship tournament, which begins next week.
The Warhawks (23-3 overall), the No. 1 seed in the tournament, punched their ticket to the final with a 67-59 win against UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday night. UW-W outscored the Titans 12-4 over the final two minutes of the contest, including a 3-pointer by
Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) that put the team ahead for good.
Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) led the Warhawks with 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists,
Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) tallied 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, and
Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) finished with 11 points and five rebounds.
UW-Eau Claire (20-7), the tournament's No. 3 seed, earned its spot in the title game with an 87-68 victory at second-seeded UW-Stout on Wednesday night. Jessie Ruden (22 points), Courtney Crouch (21) and Kylie Mogen (18) led the scoring effort for the Blugolds, who shot a blazing 57.8 percent from the floor and outscored the Blue Devils 40-23 in the first half. UW-Eau Claire's road to the championship game started Monday with a 61-54 triumph at home against No. 7 seed UW-River Falls.
The Blugolds and Warhawks split a pair of meetings during the regular season, with the home team coming out on top in each contest. UW-Eau Claire holds a 4-3 edge in the seven tournament games played between the two teams.
UW-Whitewater has claimed two WIAC Tournament titles in its history (2017, 2018), while UW-Eau Claire owns three (2000, 2001, 2003).
