Warhawk Women Wrap Up Non-Conference Slate with Win

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team closed out their non-conference campaign with a 67-50 win over Bethel University Friday night in Whitewater.

Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) knocked down an early three less than three minutes into the game to give UWW a 7-4 lead and it was all Warhawks from there. UW-Whitewater led by as much as eight in the first quarter.

A free throw at the 4:50 mark in the second for the Royals cut the lead down to three, 25-22, but Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest) and Carollo knocked down back-to-back jumpers to push the lead back to seven, 29-22 with just over three to go. An 8-4 run to close out the period had the Warhawks heading to the lockerroom enjoying a double digit, 37-26, lead.

The UW-Whitewater advantage never dipped below double figures the rest of the way. The Warhawks compiled the largest lead of the game, 20, on a layup by Abi Baumgartner (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) with 2:20 left to play. Bethel registered the final bucket and free throw of the contest for the 67-50 final.

UWW pushed the pace in the game outscoring the Royals 19-8 on fastbreak opportunities. After shooting over 53-percent from the floor each of the first three quarters, the Warhawks cooled down to 36-percent in the final quarter. Meanwhile, the defense held Bethel to under 35-percent in two of the four periods of play including just 23-percent in the final 10 minutes.

Trautsch led all players with 19 points on 7-12 from the floor adding six rebounds. Carollo ended up with 18 on the same shooting mark, 7-12. She hauled in a game-high seven boards adding four assists, two blocks and a steal. Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) was active defensively with six steals in the game.

The Warhawks return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action in the new year opening with a home game against UW-Stevens Point Wednesday January 4.
