Wrestlers Open Season with Dual Win

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team opened the season with a 32-11 dual meet win over UW-Oshkosh on the road Thursday night. 

The Titans took the lead after the first weight class with a 5-4 decision over UWW's Tyler Klein (Hartford, Wis./Hartford Union). Dominik Mallinder (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) evened the score with a 14-10 win over UWO's Denis Murphy at 133. 

The Warhawks registered back-to-back technical falls in the next two weight classes. Ethan Pogorzelski (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) topped Justin Mitchell 18-3 at 141 pounds followed by a 16-1 victory for Jake Burford (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) over Luke Moczynski at 149 to open up a 13-3 lead. 

UW-Oshkosh took the 157 pound match as Cody Welker defeated Hunter Rudzinski (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) 7-1 to make it 13-6, advantage UWW, halfway through. 

Luke Schmerbach (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) picked up a 5-3 decision over UWO's Nate Stokhaug at 165 pounds. At 174, Ryan Riser (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) registered an 11-3 major decision over Titan Michael Loger to extend the Warhawk lead to 20-6. Kaleb DeSormeau won the 184 pound weight class by forfeit to seal the win for UWW. 

UW-Oshkosh posted a win by tech fall with Beau Yineman topping Jakub Maciorowski (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard West) 20-1, but Shelby Jones (Dodgeville, Wis./Dodgeville) recorded the final win of the night by forfeit at 285 pounds for the Warhawks. 

UWW will compete in their first tournament of the season heading to Stevens Point for the Pointer Open Saturday.
