Warhawk Women Remain Unbeaten with Road Win

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team improved to 5-0 with a 69-57 win over Edgewood College in Madison Tuesday night.

The Warhawks used a lop-sided second quarter to take the lead and never looked back. Facing a three-point, 17-14, deficit after the first ten minutes, the UWW offense picked up the pace in the second quarter. The Warhawks shot 44% (10-23) from the floor while the defense allowed just three Eagle buckets in the quarter to outscore the host team 24-8 in the period. That sway opened up a 13-point UWW advantage heading into halftime.

On the other side of the break, the margin briefly dipped into single digits before an Yssa Sto. Domingo (Streamwood, Ill./St. Edward) three-pointer pushed it back into double figures where it remained most of the quarter. With just over two minutes remaining, a free throw sparked an eight-point Edgewood run to end the period, cutting the Warhawk lead down to five with 10 minutes to go.

The Eagles dropped in the first four of the fourth to make it a one-point, 54-53, game. UWW responded with a jumper from Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest), a Sto. Domingo steal and a Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) triple in under 10 seconds for a quick five-point swing. A couple of Trautsch free throws and a Carollo jumper had the gap back to double digits while Abby Belschner (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) and Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) continued the UWW streak with a pair of jumpers to cap the 13-point run. The Warhawks closed out the final three minutes to secure their fifth consecutive win of the season.

A massive advantage on the glass led to a big sway in second chance points. UW-Whitewater out-rebounded Edgewood 47-36 with an 18-4 advantage in second chance points. UWW's stifling defense added nine steals and seven blocks.

Carollo led the Warhawks with a double-double dropping in 13 points with 11 boards. She added a pair of steals, two blocks and four assists. Trautsch posted a team-high 14 points and hauled in eight rebounds. Sto. Domingo ended up with 12 points, swiping the opponent on three occasions while dishing out a game-high five assists. Grundahl wrapped up the double digit scorers with 11. Belschner frustrated the opposing shooters with four blocks adding nine points in the game.
